How To Get Focused – Step 1 Get Clarity

“Clarity affords focus.” – Thomas Leonard

How to get focused in your day to day actually doesn’t start there.

It has been my experience, with over 3,000 hours of 1 to 1 coaching, that people who are looking to get focused in their business and daily lives, don’t have a long term focus.

I’ve heard it many different ways, but it usually sounds something like:

I’m not sure what my day should look like.

I get easily distracted.

I get sidetracked by urgent matters.

I suffer from SOS. Shiney Object Syndrome.

I can’t get done all the things I want to do.

When ever I hear things like this I ask “What do you want your life, business and world to look like 5 years from now?”

I already know the answer, but I need them to get tripped up themselves.

Even if there is an answer, it is usually fuzzy. It’s out of focus. It lacks clarity.

These answers will sound something like,

“I would like to be working less.”

“Traveling.”

“Spend more time with family.”

Then if I dig deeper,

“If you are working less, what would you be doing with your free time?”

“Where would you like to travel?”

“If you are spending more time with family, what activities are you doing together?”

There usually is no answer. There is fuzziness. No clarity.

How to get focused

If you want to get focused on your day to day you need to get focused on the bigger picture.

You need to have clarity about what your life, business and world will look like in future. How to get focused is to get clarity on how you desire your world to look. Then work it backwards.

Bring that clarity of vision of your world 5 years, 10 years, or 20 years out and then reverse engineer it into today.

Is what you’re doing today, right now, moving you toward that vision of your life?

What do you need to start doing to get moving in that direction?
